GIA created global standards to accurately determine the quality of diamonds (4Cs – Color, Clarity, Cut and Carat Weight), Colored stones and pearls (7 Pearl Value Factors™ - Size, Shape, Color, Nacre, Lustre, Surface and Matching).
Add a short description of introduced grading methodologies for diamond color and diamond clarity. Their research has focused on developing methods and technologies to accurately identify and characterize gems.
They test every material submitted to them to determine whether it is natural or not, and disclose any treatments discovered during the examination.
In the 1940s, GIA established the “4Cs” and the International Diamond Grading System™ which to this day is the worldwide standard for evaluating diamond quality. GIA defines research based standards and best practices for evaluating and describing the qualities of gems.
Color
Diamond color is all about what one can’t see. Diamonds are valued by how closely they approach colorlessness – the less color, the higher their value
Clarity
Diamonds form deep within the earth, and often contain unique birthmarks, inclusions or blemishes. Diamonds without these birthmarks are rare, and rarity affects a diamond’s value.
Cut
The allure and beauty of a particular diamond depends more on cut quality than anything else. It is the factor that fuels a diamond’s fire, sparkle and brilliance.
Carat Weight
Diamonds and gemstones are weighed in metric carats: one carat is equal to 0.2 grams, about the weight of a paperclip
GIA meticulously evaluates millions of gemstones annually. The world widely accepted reports makes GIA very trustworthy.
